Ride4Ceylon is an annual four day, 400+ kilometre bicycle tour through the beautiful landscape of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) to raise funds for Green Memorial Hospital.
Ride4Ceylon (R4C) is a branch of the charity, Friends of Manipay Hospital, and a dedicated R4C committee organises and runs the annual bike ride.
Taking place in February or March each year, the cycle course traverses the stunning scenery of Sri Lanka before finishing at the hospital in Jaffna, in the north of the island.
We ride together across Sri Lanka as a symbol of healing, hope and restoration for this war-scarred land.
Green Memorial Hospital (GMH) depends on charitable donations, and the sponsored bike ride is a challenging but rewarding and fun approach to contributing towards, and raising awareness of the financial needs of the hospital.
R4C is the brainchild of a group of old boys of St Thomas' College, Colombo. Together with friends worldwide, they shared a vision to rebuild lives and communities in the war-gutted Jaffna District. Their passion to redevelop GMH and to contribute towards Sri Lanka's future birthed the idea of a 435km charity cycle ride from Colombo to Jaffna.
Six cyclists participated in our first charity ride in 2017. Since then, the sponsored bike tour has become a fully-subscribed annual event attracting sixty riders from as far afield as Australia, Canada, the US and the UK.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship and donations raised through Ride4Ceylon, we have supported GMH by helping fund:
- the construction, maintenance and renovation of the hospital site, including the nurses' living quarters and a new paediatric ward,
- the purchase of essential life-saving equipment such as an X-ray machine and an ambulance,
- the support and expansion of clinical services and research facilities.
We are enormously grateful to everyone who has been involved in making all this possible.
